I hadn’t planned to attend the Nutcracker performance this year as I have seen it twice before but….I’m glad I went. Ruth couldn’t use her ticket so I joined Elizabeth, Fred & Marion and Diane & Ron to see the ballet.
Our tickets are for the 6pm show so we gather up front at 4:50 to head downtown.
A red truck has been ordered and Marion negotiates the price. 200 hundred pesos including a tip for six people ….about $14 Canadian split six ways which is pretty cheap.
We travel through the Golden Zone pass Valentino’s on the corner and then head along the malecon to centro where we’ll watch the ballet at the Angela Peralta theatre.
We had a big rainstorm with wind, thunder and lightning last night and the clouds are still on the horizon. We’ll likely get rain again tonight as this weather system moves through.
This beautiful bride and her husband were going to the edge of the Plazuela Machado to have pictures taken.
The square is decorated and lit up for the Christmas season.
Just before six and we head over to the theatre to find our seats. The Angela Peralta Theatre has been beautifully restored and hosts a large amount of performances….music, theatre, ballet etc.
Elizabeth and I are seated in the fifth row and the curtain has gone up. There is no one sitting in front of us and I can take pictures with ease. There is a Mexican father and his very young daughter sitting next to us. She is very shy but I did ask her what her name is and she said “ Ayala” ….I think! Her father speaks english and he said he learned english when he lived in California as a child by watching cartoons. A good idea as the same words are repeated over and over and over…maybe I should start watching Spanish cartoons!
The first dancers appear in front of the huge Christmas tree which is surrounded by presents.
The sets are very realistic and well done compared to the last time I was here.
Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house and everyone dances. There is a live orchestra in the pit in front of the stage and they are very good. The lighting changes each time the dancers change.
The mice have appeared and they are as cute as ever and boy were there a lot of them!
This young choir was on the balcony just to our left and they appeared to sing for one dance. They had a huge sound and were very good.
Clara journeys to the land of snow. There was misty smoke on stage which made this winter scene appear as cold as the snow on the trees.
There were Spanish, Arabian, Russian etc. dances.
The waltz of the flowers.
Isn’t she lovely!
This is my favorite dance of the ballet.
The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Cavalier dance the Pas De Deux.
A medley of dancers.
Clara and the Nutcracker.
Flowers and mice!
The Sugar Plum Fairy.
Look at this grumpy little mouse in the middle.
The ballet is over and it was wonderful! The dancing to my untrained eye was flawless and much more polished than the last two times I attended. The sets were lovely and much better than in the past.
The ballet is over and we move outside to the square to find a red truck home. Some of us could have gone for a drink but others were ready to head home so …..home it was. By this time it was chilly in the back of the red truck and we’ll probably get rain later tonight.
A very lovely evening.
