Jackpot, NV to Ely, NV and a little wrinkle!

We were off to Ely Nevada and the Prospector casino hotel on Friday morning.  Temp -2 and a good breakfast in the hotel before hitting the road.

Heading south and it was a grey day. We left at 8am from Jackpot and just down the road was a pacific time zone sign and now it was 7am! How can you have two time zones in one state!
The snow fell on Wednesday and now the road is dry.
That's a bridge for the deer up ahead.  This is a deer migration area and there are high fences on either side of the road.  In some places they have tunnels under the road.
Coming into Wells, NV where we got fuel at the Love's station.  Elevation is about 5500 ft. At home we're at 500 ft!
We love the wide open expanses and the mountains in the distance.
This is all part of the great basin.

Look at that sky...just glorious!
Coming into McGill just north of Ely and it's an old copper mining town.  We stopped here for lunch.  I have sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, potato salad and yogurt on the menu.
It's not an optical illusion...the street is hugely sloped to the right ...why..??
Coming into Ely and we're over 6000 ft.
We got in at about 1:15 and check in was at 3 so we were too early.  I checked us in and we had an hour to kill.
First we went to the south end of town and up the hill to the gas station and now for the wrinkle.  Eric accelerated up the hill and then there were big black clouds of diesel smoke!  Not good at all.  No loss of power but smoke. It kept up after fueling and now we were worrying we had a bad injector.  Eric has been adding diesel Kleene regularly.
While waited we went down to the heritage steam train site.  I did a big blog about this years ago.  It is hugely interesting.

The old train station has been redone since we were last here.
Lovely old house just up from the station.  I could live in it but not here...too cold!
View out of our very nice room.  The rooms are in a long building attached to the Casino.

Very nice room.

The hall is an art statement.

This is in the lobby and it is amazing.  The horse is made of short pieces of chromed pipe all welded together.  Absolutely amazing. The  great dane dogs are fiberglass and most real.

We went to the casino Mexican restaurant and it was full.  She said we could wait in the bar so Eric went back to the room for our free drink coupons😁

We are not casino people but after a few pre casino beers here we are.

Amazing amount of noise, smoke and light.  To us it seems like an alternate world.  When people are in a casino the real world disappears.  Sad to see how poor and old the people are though.

Chilli relleno, refried beans and Mexican rice. Good but we'd regret it in the middle of the night😁

Then it was off to bed.  Worried about the truck and hopeful we'd make it Laughlin today.

One thing I said to Eric was that both times the truck has done this we got fuel at Love's in Wells, Nv...coincidence?? Hopefully that's it as the truck is a 2005 and injectors can easily fail and would be hugely expensive.  We've put a lot of money into it over the last 5 year's and it's worth about $12 thousand and a new one is at least $80 thousand for a new one. We're thinking it should do us out!🤣

  1. The chile relleno looks really good! Truck issues. That happened to us in April but it was a quick fix. Our SUV is a 2005 with 375,000 km. Like you said, the cost new is outrageous. Be safe and have fun.
