Jackpot,NV to Pendleton,OR and the Wildhorse casino.

A cold night in Jackpot.  We had dinner in the casino restaurant last night and I ordered a New York strip loin that came with two sides so I ordered the salad and a loaded potato.  Eric ordered spaghetti.  He laughed at me when he saw the steak and potato...pretty big!  I shared the salad with him and I did manage the steak and 1/2 the potato.

This morning we were up early and off to the restaurant for breakfast.  Always too much food no matter what you order and the more we eat out the more we look forward to home.  This is the old jukebox in the restaurant.

Heading up the hill out of town and immediately we leave Nevada and we're in Idaho.  Cold and windy at 3C...😨
A beautiful morning as we head towards Twin Falls.  In Nevada the time is one hour ahead but the time we get to Oregon it will be Pacific daylight time.
We stopped in Buhl for fuel on old highway 30 which is the scenic route to Boise. It follows the Snake river and has lots to see.
So many beautiful old buildings in this area.  As you can see its not spring here yet.  The grass is growing but the trees haven't leafed out yet.

Look at the roof angles.
The highway jogs around the farms.
That grass has a huge amount of fertilizer...way too green.
Look at the boulders!  Can you imagine trying to farm that.

Rock cliffs all along the way.

Leaving highway 30 and onto I 84 and Boise.
A high Prairie.
Spots of green wherever there is water.
Getting close to Boise.
3 to 4 lanes from just so that of Boise until you get almost to Ontario.  Eric stays in the middle lane all the way through. They are constantly making the highway wider and wider.
Following the Snake River.  We used stop in Catfish Junction with the 5th wheel which is on the Snake River.

The very odd irrigation ditches that wind back and forth.

Crossing the Snake River.
Welcome to Oregon.
We stopped at the Weatherby rest stop for lunch.
Getting close to Baker City and we rise in elevation.
                                 Snow on them thar mountains.
Next up LA Grande and then up and over cabbage hill.
Up we go..more and more trees.  We've had some stressful trips through here with wind, rain and snow.  Not today..it's beautiful.

Always snow here.

High here but nothing like Ely.

Starting to head down towards Pendleton...a 6% grade and the trucks are supposed to go really slow.  Some do...some don't.

A patchwork of farms in the distance.

Interesting rock formations.
Up ahead Pendleton and the Wildhorse casino.

This is a new stop for us.  On the way south in November we stayed at motel 6 and it was awful.  I decided to try this because it has restaurants.
When we arrived I went in to check us in.  The rooms aren't cheap here but..I got lucky.  Tuesdays are cheap for seniors (over 55) if you belong to the Emerald Club.  The young lady at reception suggested I join (free) and then she could give me a cheap room. The tower rooms are regularly  $145 US but on Tuesdays the are $55!  What a deal.  I signed up and here we are.  Lovely room with speedy wifi and...the casino and hotel etc. is smoke free.  A bonus!  Dogs are allowed for a fee but only in the older courtyard hotel.  We are still looking for good stops as we travel now that we aren't RVing. All a learned experience.

Eric relaxing before dinner.  We just went to the food court and had Pad Thai for dinner..pretty good.  So this is our new stop in Pendleton..coming and going and....always on cheap Tuesday!!

I added this link..I hope it's hot.  All in all a good day and tomorrow we are off to Kelowna, BC where we'll stay with Erics brother Ian and wife Linda for a few days before heading north again.

  1. It seems you are driving longer distances in one day?

  2. Hard to break the trip up exactly. I try to find decent stops and stay between 350 and 400 miles. Only our second journey without the RV so still figuring it out. Last time we did a different route heading south. Not as nice as travelling with your rolling house!

  3. You are doing a great job figuring out distances and new stops. It’s hard to avoid a few long driving days in this area. Nice to know that the casino is none smoking. I’m looking for some changes to our route next season. Contessa
