Attempted robbery and shooting in Las Jaibas

Saturday,  March 6, 2010

Thursday night at about 11:30 pm there was an attempted robbery? kidnapping? at the back of the park.  I had heard unusual vehicle traffic throughout the night  but nothing else.  It appears that armed men posing as police? tried to enter a large motorhome at the back of the park.  In the ensuing struggle the Canadian man was shot.  The assailants left and a neighbour (Bob from Chilliwack) came out to help when he heard the shot (brave or what!) and discovered the man had been shot in the leg.  He transported him to the hospital where he is recovering.  The bullet just missed a main artery.  The stories have been flying as to why and how this happened but in the end it did actually happen and it has taken the wind out of everyone's sails.  The municipal police are now driving through the park every few hours but too little, too late.  You can read the wife's account of this in: http://www.globaltvcalgary.com/Calgarian+shot+while+vacationing+Mexico/2647015/story.html

The local Noroeste Mazatlan paper had a different story with different names and reason for the attack.  The above link is apparently the story given to the Calgary paper by the wife.  Scary stuff.  I'm sorry if this terrifies our children and friends but it is what happened and we can't hide from it.  Will we come back next year?  Probably.

Most of the rigs at the back of the park (which is set up for caravans) have moved forward.  People are leaving but most because they were going to anyhow.

The Maxipista is open north to La Cruz in both lanes and then blocked into one lane at that point.  From there it goes back to two lanes after you have passed the protesters.  This opening may be temporary as it depends on the talks with the government.

I had delayed this post as I wanted to get the story straight and not just report rumours.

  1. Hi Kathy:
We left Las Jaibas this morning (one day early) mostly due to the weather.
Even tho the news reported that Hwy 15D, the toll road, would be open north of La Cruz, that was not the case. We had to detour thru La Cruz and travel the Libre to Culiacan. The free road was actually pretty good and it only cost us about an extra 30 min in time and 25 km plus we saved about $25 in tolls. We would have preferred to pay the toll.
