Our first concert of the season at the Angela Peralta Theater

During the winter months of January, February and sometimes a bit of March we attend Sunday afternoon concerts at the Angela Peralta Theater in the Plaza Machado.  The concerts were started by Gordon Campbell and are now in their 15th year.  Gordon picks a variety of concerts to present and we decide which ones look interesting to us.  This season we will attend four and Sunday was the first concert of the season for us.

We left home just before 11am and were off on the bus.  The ride can take any where from 30 minutes to an hour.  On Sunday the bus was full including standing room by the time we hit the Golden Zone so the driver wasn't stopping to pick up passengers.

Just before noon and we head in to the theater.
I buy our tickets for the season in advance and that way we get to sit where we want which is the first balcony closer to the rear of the theater.

The concert ended up being well attended.

The orchestra is in place.

Gordon welcomes us and thanks us all for coming.  He explains that the first two pieces are favorites of his.

He explained a little bit about what we were going to hear this afternoon.  He mentioned that his father never liked going to musical concerts because he didn't know what was being played and Gordon said that's why he does some explaining.

This is Jorge Mejia on trumpet and Jose Miguel Rivera on piano being introduced for the third set.
Shostakovich Concerto #1 for piano, trumpet and strings Op35.
Unfortunately for Eric and I we both intensely disliked the composition.  An assault to the ears by the piano and trumpet.  It seemed that the whole thing was disjointed and horribly unmusical.  The actual pianist, trumpet and strings were wonderful but not the music.  You win some and you lose some!

The concert was just a brief hour and it was done.

We were off to find lunch and off course we ended up at Chon's our favorite Sunday afternoon restaurant.
Ready for beer and food!  It was nice and quiet as we were early and most of the locals don't show up until just after 2pm.

Lunch is served and Eric ordered Campache in a glass.  Shrimp and octopus in a warm broth with tostadas and crackers on the side.  Unfortunately there was no octopus or "pulpa" in it so the waitress adjusted the bill.  Eric added some hot sauce and used some of my spicy salsa and tortillas.

These are very good.

I like a whole deep fried fish and this one is Corvina.  Very tasty served with rice, salad, salsa and tortillas.

I managed to eat the whole fish and salad and Eric helped with the rice and tortillas.  Yummy!

Lunch was done and we were off to catch the bus home.  Revolution square is always full of pigeons!  A very quick ride home with our overly speedy bus driver and the day was done.  Just cheese and crackers with cake for dessert.
