We were up early today around 6:30 am as we had a long way to go. 353miles is a long day for us. It isn’t supposed to be very windy so we we’re hoping for an easy day.
On the road by 7:45am and it was windy for the first hour or so. A very brisk crosswind which is even worse than a head wind even though they weren’t calling for any. Yesterday was a screamer and even then about a half dozen rigs pulled into the park. Don’t people look at the weather reports? Even the park owner said it was crazy for people to be driving.
Starting to green up here and there are even a couple of drops of rain on the windshield from last nights shower.
We love this drive as the scenery is just beautiful.
Heading north on 318.
Turn right for Ely.
The mountains don’t look quite real.
White Water Narrows and I can never resist a couple of pictures.
Too bad there isn’t a good place to stop with an RV and have a look. No time today anyways.
We’ll stop in Lund before heading up the hill to Ely. Ely is at 6500 ft. but Lund is over 5000 so it’s pretty high too.
Lots of scenery pictures today!
These ones don’t even look real.
Still lots of snow on “ them thar mountains!”
Here we are leaving the Lund fuel stop and you can see the RV at the pump. Eric and the driver had a quick chat and when Eric said we’d spent the winter in Mexico the guy asked where. Eric said Mazatlan and the guy said so had they and Eric asked where. The guy couldn’t remember the name of the park and asked his wife and she said “Las Jaibas” which is where we were. Turns out he was in site 120 a few spaces away from us at the back of the park and he thought he’d recognized our truck when we pulled in to fuel up. We’d never spoken to them while we were in Las Jaibas but there are so many people and….so little time! We aren’t very gregarious and don’t make it our business to know who is in the park and where they are from. Just not our style. Anyway once again what are the odds that we would run into someone from the park at a gas station on the way home from Mexico. They are from Edmonton, Alberta and we are from northern B.C. I did check when we stopped and they do have full RV hook-ups here which would work out as a stop if ….it wasn’t too cold. Always the issue.
Heading up the hill to Ely and the junipers start to appear.
24 miles to go.
Murry Summit 7316 and it’s cold here.
We fueled up at the south end of Ely when we got in because we weren’t sure we could make it another 130 miles to Wells which is the next place we can get fuel. Turns out we used 4 gallons of fuel to go less than 30 miles. Yikes! We’ll call that a $20 dollar (Canadian) hill!
Heading out of Ely and we always wish it was warmer so we could hang around for a few days and enjoy the town. It happened a few years ago and we even got to ride the old steam train. Maybe next year.
Diesel $3.42 a gallon. It’s a lot higher than it was down south.
Just north of Ely is McGill and it’s still high here.
A company mining town and the houses reflect that.
The town with the slanted street.
Maybe an old mine office building.
The high crosswind has eased off a bit and Eric has been able to use cruise control. If it’s not windy this is a very pleasant, relaxing drive. It’s about 6C and we’re still over 6000ft.
A rest stop before Wells and it’s time for lunch. Not too toasty in the RV. I should have made lunch this morning before we started out but after being subjected to 100F temps in Arizona/Nevada it didn’t occur to me!
Straight ahead for Wendover or left for Wells. Left!
In the end we were glad we fueled up in Ely as there has been a fair bit of wind and that’s really hard on mileage. We only have a 20 gallon tank so if our mileage is poor we can’t go very far.
This is Goshute which used to have a gas station but now….not.
Straight as an arrow for mile upon mile.
We fueled up in Wells and then onward.
North of Wells there is a huge deer migration area and the fences are probably 8 feet tall.
They’ve built a couple of these deer overpasses in this area and I guess the deer must get used to them eventually. My how we impact the world with our highways and vehicles.
A pretty day and I’m always taking pictures. I’ve only included about 1/2 of what I actually took.
We’re getting closer to Jackpot and there is more unusual geology here.
The rocks are completely….
…..round!
Some of them look like a modeling clay sculpture or an abstract painting.
Nothing green here but last year’s dead grass looks pretty.
Coming into Jackpot around 4pm and it’s cold.
We’ve been at over 6000 ft. almost all day and we’re still at 5265 here.
Cactus Pete’s RV park wasn’t too full when we rolled in so we got a pull-thru which is easier than a back in. Last year we’d blown a tire and had to stop in Ely for a spare so we didn’t arrive until 5:30pm and almost didn’t get a spot. It did fill up later today but it wasn’t completely full like last year. A sunny afternoon and with the electric and propane heaters running we should stay warm. Supposed to go down to about –3 or –4C tonight so I’ll throw some extra blankets on the bed!
A long day with no disasters so….a good day all in all! Beer and leftover frozen spicy Asian pork stew for supper and all is well. I loaded up my tablet with Netflix when we were in Alamo and Eric has lots recorded on the PVR so we’re set. Tomorrow off to Catfish Junction, Oregon.
