Trip back to Phoenix and getting ready to leave for Mexico.

Our three weeks at home were a busy affair.  Lots of garden clean up for me, winterizing machinery and putting it to bed for Eric, some medical appointments (one of them an MRI for Eric 350 miles away) and numerous things to be done with paperwork issues for the trip.  It was busy and we were tired when we left home.

We winterized the house on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd and put a storage policy on our Jeep before heading to our daughter Erika and son-in-law Wade’s for dinner and a sleep over before heading out the next morning.  We had a really nice evening with a great dinner and the final game of the World Series.  When our team, the Blue Jays lost we decided to back the Chicago Cubbies who were playing the Cleveland Indians in the final games.  We couldn’t back the Indians because they knocked out the Jays!  I stayed up by myself to watch the Cubbies win in the bottom of the 10th inning….what a nail biter!

Eric got to play with Chloe (or Shmoopy as we call her) our daughter’s 16 month old Greater Swiss Mountain dog whom he just loves.  She is a great big galoote and totally overwhelms their old Chocolate Lab Tikka who is now 10.  She is smart and sweet and is a great dog.  I constantly give her the “Caesar” chick, chick sound and she drops to the floor and smiles at me.  She knows I won’t let her misbehave but she holds no grudges.  She loves Eric more!!!

Chloe is much more boisterous than she looks here.

Thursday morning Nov. 3rd Erika dropped us off at the airport for our 11am flight and we were away.  It was pouring rain in Terrace so it was a good time to get out of town.

The flight to Vancouver was fine but I knew we’d have to hustle as we only had one hour to get to the other end of the airport, clear USA customs and make our flight.  When I booked this I tried to get more time between flights but my option was getting to the airport in Terrace at 5:30 am and I really didn’t want to do that.  In retrospect we should have done that.  When we arrived at the gate for our Delta flight we had ten minutes to spare and everyone else was on the plane.  The nice check in man was very calm, said there was no problem and even let us both pee before we boarded the flight.  Since we were on last we had to store our carry on luggage under out feet.  There was absolutely no leg room on the Delta flight unlike the Alaska flight when we flew north.  We landed in Los Angeles and had time to get dinner before our next Delta flight to Phoenix.  When we rushed back to the gate we found the flight was delayed due to weather in Phoenix (heavy rain and lightening) and instead of arriving in Phoenix at 8:30 pm it was 10:15pm.  This flight also had no leg room and I will try not to book Delta again.  We finally found the SuperShuttle pick up and we were home by 11pm….exhausted.

Friday morning we were off to WalMart for me to shop for butter, cheese etc. for Mexico and Eric even got the synthetic oil for the Harley and then back to the 5th wheel.   When I entered the rig I stepped into water on the floor….we had a leak!  Great.  Eric had to tear the underside of the kitchen sink apart to locate a leak under one of the taps.  With that repaired I noticed a gang of ants in the bedroom.  I’d sprinkled ant powder before we left but after it rained they crawled up the water hose into the 5th wheel.  I got out my Raid ant drops and sprinkled them around and they happily had lunch and all died!  Yay for me.

After lunch it was off to Al’s RV store to buy a new set of kitchen taps which Eric will install when we get to Mazatlan.  Later that day our friends John & Jeri who live in Phoenix came by.  Jeri had some bags of clothes for us to transport to Mexico for her.  John and Jeri are friends and neighbours from Las Jaibas and Jeri is a going concern collecting articles for the poor in Mexico.  We had a nice catch up visit and will see them in Las Jaibas this winter.

Beer, dinner and bed.   That was a really busy day!

Saturday morning and we now have our new Galaxy Smart phone from our daughter Krista and son-in-law Jeff.  It is a replacement for our old AT&T flip phone which is on their USA plan.  Eric managed to get it initialized and it should be great in Mexico.  AT&T has added Mexico with no charge to certain customers who qualify and Jeff and Krista do.  We will be able to text, use the phone in Mexico and the USA and will have 1 Gig of mobile data with no charge to them so that is going to be really helpful when we don’t have WiFi.

By 1:30 pm we were packed up, tanks dumped, hooked up and on the road to spend a night at the Desert Diamond Casino in Sauharita, Arizona in preparation for crossing the border on Sunday morning.

See next post for the journey.
