Last night Bill/Jeannette, Frank/Sandi, Dennis/Marilyn and little “ole” me went to the “Hairdresser’s Ball!” Rosie has been operating her hair dressing shop for 11 years now and last year she wanted to throw a 10 year anniversary party for her clients. The shop is called ”Gaby’s” after her daughter and last year they had to change the space they were operating out of so she had no time for a big party. They are now farther back in the Plaza Bonita shopping center as the space they occupied on the front of the Plaza became too expensive. They have also added a separate massage room.
We decided to take an Auriega or red truck as the party was off the bus route. The party was being held just off Avenida Dr. Carlos Canseco up close to where we go to get water.
We were delivered right to the door for 100 pesos (thanks Bill!) That’s Sandi signing the guest book with Dennis, Bill and Jeannette waiting.
While she signed in I took Frank’s picture!
and then….Frank & Sandi’s picture. Funny!
We were all amazed at the beautiful venue for the party. We really didn’t know what to expect. The invitation times were staggered so that everyone didn’t show up at the same time and we were at the end at 5:30pm. The tables were full of people eating and drinking. We wandered to the back and got in line for drinks which were provided along with a meal. How generous is that. I think there must have been 2 to 3 hundred people. Wow! I was unaware that I should have a packet with drink tickets and a meal ticket so I wandered off to find one of Rosie’s ladies to see what I should do. I found Marta who sometimes does my pedicure and was told “ No problem Missus!” Good to know. All of Rosie’s workers were working hard serving liquor and delivering food trays.
While we waited in line there were a few speeches explaining how Rosie got her start. She is in her work uniform at this point and crying her eyes out!
She tried valiantly to thank us all for our support of her shop but she was overcome by emotion! A lovely, generous lady. I do not profess to know the whole story but we were told that it all started over 11 years ago at Trailer Park Mar Rosa where she would come to the park to cut hair. Loans were given and repaid and eventually she rented a space to work out of and the rest is history. The ladies at the shop are warm, friendly, funny and it is a delight to go there! Along with that the services are very economical.
There were chairs set up at the front ahead of the tables and they were filled with children from the orphanage that Rosie supports. She gives back to those in need!
This is the fellow from Mar Rosa trailer park explaining how Rosie started out…..she is still crying!
There was no where for us to sit as all the tables were full so we took it upon ourselves to set up our own table in the corner. No tablecloth but ….who cares. We made sure to get a few drinks each as we’d stood in the line up for a 1/2 hour. Now…..we just needed food! Not a problem as the gals were wandering around with large trays with meals on them. Fish, chicken or beef and I had chosen fish. Not piping hot (couldn’t be under the circumstances) but very, very tasty and well prepared. There were also puddings, cakes and fruit trays as well. What a spread! We were joined by Hal/Helene from our park and were now a happy table of nine.
We had a one man band with a guitar who sang and a music back up machine. Nothing like the “Beatles” sung with a Spanish accent! Lots of Gringos so old Gringo music is what he played. That’s Bill/Jeannette and Frank/Sandi dancing and Marilyn/Dennis somewhere in the back ground.
Rosie’s family was there as well and so were some small sweet grand children.
Dressed to the “nines” and ready to party!
Finally the staff gets to relax and have a drink!
By 8pm the party was winding down. Rosie is now in her gold party dress and she is dancing with Marta and having a whale of a time.
Some of the boys even got up to dance.
If the men won’t dance ….the women will!
Frank and Rosie saying “Bye….Rosie cuts Frank’s hair too!”
Sandi and Rosie. I hugged her too but no picture!
We walked down the street to find a ride home and we spied this group of teenagers line dancing to the “old Gringo music” that they could hear from Rosie’s party! They were laughing and having a great time.
Standing on the corner waiting for a ride home. In the end there were no red trucks to take us all together and we split up into two groups and took a Pulmonia home.
Not us….but you get the idea!
Home early and a great time was had by all!
What a lovely story of how Rosie got her start. She must be a very special lady to have such a fabulous party. I'm sure you are glad you went.
