A first trip out on Big Red

Thursday December 8, 2011

Today we took a ride out to El Tigre’s on the beach with Sam & Rita.  We’ve made this trip a few times but it’s always fun because once you get west of Villa Union it is pretty quiet.  You take the road west of town that says El Walamo which is a small town that you pass through on the way to the beach.  There is a huge amount of agriculture out this way with vegetables, aquaculture (shrimp farming) and many other crops.

That’s Eric getting fuel on Big Red….but it doesn’t look so big here!

That is a mule pulling the cultivator with the farmer (or worker) behind.  The mule would have to be careful not to step on the crops.  You don’t need to be high tech to get the job done right.

In many areas they grow crops under the palm trees.

This is photo of Sam & Rita taken behind my head without looking while we were riding.

I thought those buildings in the distance were greenhouses but it turns out they are for shrimp farming.  The ocean is directly to the right of them.

Sam & Rita with Eric in the background.  Eric chose to park on the pavement even though it was in the sun.

We had the restaurant to ourselves and it was really nice because this time it wasn’t cold.  Eric had ceviche ( a Mexican favorite) which is shrimp marinated in lime juice (not cooked) with a bunch of vegetables.  Sam ordered a big plate of camarones (shrimp) for an appetizer and then we all had pesco frito (fried fish) and it was a lot of food.  With a couple of small Pacifico’s thrown in for good measure we were really full.  A good meal and not much needed for supper that night.

Time to hit the road and head home.

We were happy to find that the road heading out to El Rosario has been repaved and it is really nice because in the past there were more potholes than pavement!  This is the road that Jean from Alberta had his serious motorcycle accident on two winters ago and we are always mindful of that.

A good ride home and another enjoyable day done.
