Angela Peralta–”Hard Travelin”’–Woody Guthrie portrayed by (Randy Noojin)

IMG_8647

Today’s performance at the Angela Peralta Theatre was the first Sunday afternoon Gordon Campbell sponsored production of the season.

Above is a bit of information on the many talents of Randy Noonjin.

IMG_8648

Along with the play’s monologue were many of Woody’s songs which we were encouraged to sing along to.  Who hasn’t sung “This Land is your land” at some point in their life.

IMG_8651

I do not buy season’s tickets to the Sunday performances but some of my friends do.  Today I purchased George and Sharen’s tickets as they have not arrived yet.  I had decided it would be nice to treat my sister-in- law Linda to a performance at the Angela Peralta theatre.  We are so lucky to have such a beautiful facility here in Mazatlan.

IMG_8574

Today it was just Ruth, Linda and myself going to the performance.  The show starts at 12 noon so we were on the bus and heading downtown by 11am.  Here you can see Ruth heading down Constitucion towards the Plazuela Machado where the Angela Peralta is located.

IMG_8575

Ruth took a couple pictures on my camera of Linda and I in front of the theatre but….they weren’t there so I don’t know what happened.  Our seats are on the right about 4 rows back from the front…super view.

IMG_8576

First we were greeted by Gordon Campbell who thanked us all for coming (in English and Spanish) and then gave us a bit of history of the Sunday shows.  It is his mission to bring musical culture to the people of Mazatlan and he is doing a great job.  He did explain how important our patronage of these events is and encouraged us to keep coming.  He has been the conductor of the orchestra in the past but will now be a director and only conduct some performances.   A very warm, nice man.

IMG_8577

Woody arrived on stage by trotting down the center aisle and greeting us as if we were in an American mineworkers union hall and we were the union workers.

                   IMG_8578

Woody explained that his given name was Woodrow Wilson Guthrie after the American president but that he had shortened it up to Woody!

Below is an excerpt from Wikepedia….

Woodrow Wilson Guthrie (/ˈɡʌθri/; July 14, 1912 – October 3, 1967) was an American singer-songwriter, one of the most significant figures in American folk music; his songs, including social justice songs, such as "This Land Is Your Land", have inspired several generations both politically and musically.[1][2][3] He wrote hundreds of political, folk, and children's songs, along with ballads and improvised works. His album of songs about the Dust Bowl period, Dust Bowl Ballads, is included on Mojo magazine's 100 Records That Changed The World.[4] Many of his recorded songs are archived in the Library of Congress.[5] Songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Hunter, Harry Chapin, John Mellencamp, Pete Seeger, Andy Irvine, Joe Strummer, Billy Bragg, Jerry Garcia, Jay Farrar, Bob Weir, Jeff Tweedy, Bob Childers, Sammy Walker, Tom Paxton and Andrew Jackson Jihad have acknowledged Guthrie as a major influence. He frequently performed with the slogan This machine kills fascists displayed on his guitar.

Guthrie was brought up by middle-class parents in Okemah, Oklahoma, until he was 14, when his mother was hospitalised as a consequence of Huntington's disease, a hereditary neurological disorder, and his father had to move to Pampa, Texas, to repay debts from unsuccessful real estate deals. During his early teens Guthrie learned folk and blues songs from his parents' friends. He married at 19, but with the advent of the dust storms that marked the Dust Bowl period, he left his wife and three children to join the thousands of Okies who were migrating to California looking for work. He worked at Los Angeles radio station KFVD, achieving some fame from playing hill-billy music; made friends with Will Geer and John Steinbeck; and wrote a column for the Communist newspaper People's World from May 1939 to January 1940. Throughout his life Guthrie was associated with United States Communist groups, although he was seemingly not a member of any.[6] With the outbreak of World War II and the non-aggression pact the Soviet Union had signed with Germany in 1939, the owners of KFVD radio were not comfortable with Guthrie's Communist sympathies; he left the station, ending up in New York where he wrote and recorded his 1940 album Dust Bowl Ballads, based on his Dust Bowl experiences, and which earned him the nickname the "Dust Bowl Troubadour".[7] In February 1940 he wrote his most famous song, "This Land Is Your Land", as a response to what he felt was an overplaying of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" on the radio.

Guthrie was married three times and fathered eight children, including musician Arlo Guthrie. Guthrie died from complications of Huntington's disease. During his later years, in spite of his illness, Guthrie served as a figurehead in the folk movement, providing inspiration to a generation of new folk musicians, including mentoring Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Bob Dylan.                     Woody Guthrie 2.jpg

Woody Guthrie

IMG_8579

Randy gave a very realistic portrayal of Woody Guthrie and his musical talent was obvious.

IMG_8580

As Randy chatted about Woody’s life in Oklahoma and the trials and tribulations of his travels he really brought him to life.

IMG_8581

The screen behind him contained archived footage of the life and times that Woody lived in.  Above the screen his monologue was translated into Spanish and when we were asked to sing along the words were in both English and Spanish.  At the end of the performance he received a standing ovation and he returned for one more song….that we once again sang along to.   A thoroughly enjoyable well done performance.  I suspect that the politics of many of the people in attendance leant quite a bit to the left and that there was also huge support for unions as a whole.

In the early years of my husbands employment with B.C. Tel there were many days of wages lost due to walk outs in support of union beliefs.  In the late 70’s even our children walked the picket line with their Dad.  Nothing good ever comes without sacrifice.

IMG_8582

Following the performance we wandered out into the Plazuela to look for a quick snack.  As the show had started at noon none of us had eaten lunch.

IMG_8583

We sat down at one of the many restaurants that line the perimeter of the plazuela and ordered a drink and a bowl of soup.  This picture was taken by a kind lady at the next table.  She worried that her shaky hands would ruin the picture…not perfect but you get the idea.

IMG_8585

The lady on the left took the picture and you can see Gordon Campbell who stopped by to have a chat.  I assume that he knew both of these ladies.

So…we had a nice bowl of tortilla soup and it was time to head home.

IMG_8586

Back up Constitucion to Benito Juarez and then over to the market to catch the Cerritos bus home.

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and over the next couple of months I will try to attend a couple more performances.

Lucky B’s for Ladies Lunch

Last week there were 5 of us going for lunch and today there was 20!  Linda and Ian walked over from Cerritos resort this morning,  Linda and I will go for lunch and Eric and Ian will go to the Gran Plaza Tel Cel booth and see if they can get Linda’s phone activated.  She unlocked it before she left home and now she can have a Tel Cel Sim card put in it and the cheap Mexican phone plan.

IMG_8540

All right….all you chachalacas head over to the bus!  It gets pretty loud when 20 women are all talking at once.

IMG_8541

When we walked over to catch the bus there was a Mexican family with Moms and Dads along with Grammas and little children having a picnic on the meridian.  Aren’t these little girls just adorable.  The Gramma really liked it when I took their picture.

IMG_8542

Who are these wild and crazy guys?  I don’t know the guy on the left’s name but that is Frank and Dennis standing with him.  Apparently they are waiting for Manny to pick them up and take them to “Beer and beans” which is actually beer and shrimp.  Manny where are you?

IMG_8543

We hopped the Cerritos Juarez bus to head to the Golden Zone.  9 pesos and air conditioned by the open windows!

IMG_8544

That’s Ruth holding up the flowers that she bought for Connie.  It’s Connie’s birthday today and we are filling out a card while we’re on the bus.  Way too bumpy to write and my greeting looked like I was drunk!

IMG_8545

Lovely yellow roses for Connie.

  > Mainmap

We got off at the Panama bakery and walked down Garzas to Avenida Gaviotis where Lucky B’s is.  Really, really busy today with all the Nationals still here holidaying.  It would be even busier if the cruise ship was in port.

IMG_8547

We were seated at two tables on the top floor of the restaurant.  Ruth wished Connie a happy birthday and gave her the flowers.  Connie wanted to know who snitched about her birthday….come on Connie we all know when your birthday is!  Feliz compleanos!

IMG_8549

Ruth even brought a crown and beads….how thoughtful.  I finally got a decent picture of Connie….doesn’t she look nice.

IMG_8550

Nancy, Sue, Jeannette, and Robyn on the left and Eddie, Karin, Nancy, Helene and Pat on the right.

IMG_8551

Bonnie with her back to us and Claudette, (her friend) Connie and Bev at the end on the right. Linda, Sandi and Marilyn on the left.  At this point the very efficient waiter wrote down all of our names and took our drink orders.  The service here is amazing!

                   IMG_8552

Karin ordered a large shrimp cocktail for lunch.  It wasn’t that large but….the shrimps were!

IMG_8553

After a bunch of blabbing and drinking the food started to arrive.  I managed to get a picture of all the meals but I’m not sure what each one is.  Too many people!

IMG_8554

That’s Helene with her salad.  This is the first time she has joined us for lunch….it’s nice to have her with us.

IMG_8555

IMG_8556

Delicious looking sandwiches with different things in them.

IMG_8557

This one looks like it’s being shared.

IMG_8558

These are Jeannette’s shared onion rings.  I teased her by saying “ that sure looks healthy!”  They look delicious and huge!

RIGHT HERE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A TECHNICAL BREAK!

Right about here while creating my blog draft things went south.  I’d downloaded my photos to my pictures file on my laptop and then formatted my SD card which cleared the card and when I looked I was missing about 10 pictures in my pictures file….crap!  Now what?  My first thought was if the FBI and the CIA can find old data on laptops I must be able to find these pictures!  I went on line and asked Mr. Google what to do.   I found a program that said it could retrieve the pictures from the card even though I had formatted it.  I downloaded the program, found the pictures among the 2000 that were still imbedded in the card and then the free trial became $39 American if I actually wanted to download them.   No Gracias!  I removed the program and went looking for a free one.  I found a highly recommended program called Recuva and downloaded that….for free.  It found the pictures and I moved them into the correct file and voila….my blood pressure went down.  How cool is that!  I had read that by formatting the card it was really cleared off….apparently not.  Why I always clear the card is another matter that I’ll talk about some other time.    Onward …..

IMG_8559_1IMG_8560

All the ladies happily eating lunch.  The food was delicious and there were no complaints from anyone.

IMG_8561

I think this is a paradise salad.

IMG_8563

My sister in law Linda and I both order Dorado Marymar.

IMG_8564

Grilled dorado topped with shrimp and served with vegetables and rice.  Absolutely delicious!

IMG_8565

This looks like a chicken salad.

IMG_8566

I think that’s Sandi’s bracelet over top of her salad.

IMG_8567

Looks like Ruth might have the same thing.

IMG_8568

Bev ordered beef Arrachara which is a spicy mexican flank steak.  I did note that there was quite a bit of beef on her plate after we had all eaten.

IMG_8569

Everyone at our table was happy with their meals …I think.

                    _MG_8571

When we’d finished lunch the little old man who makes marionettes showed up.  He is just the sweetest guy and if I had a small grand child I would have purchased one.

IMG_8572

We had a peek in the other part of the restaurant where they seat people when it’s full up top.  Nice picture of Linda and Ruth in front of Jimmy Dean etc.

IMG_8573

You can see the extensive mural behind them.  Easy rider, Elvis, Marilyn etc.

So…a really, really good lunch experience.  Good food, a waiter who was attentive but not overbearing and who knew our names by the end of the meal (wow!) and decent prices.  Good any day of the week!

At this point everyone went their own way.  Linda and I wandered off to shop (didn’t buy anything) and I went to leave my watch for repairs but….I had the wrong purse and it was at home…duh!

When we got back to the park the guys were back from “trying” to get Linda’s phone activated.  Turns out that Bell didn’t actually unlock it….crap…more technical difficulties.

So..I looked up the numbers for Bell in Canada and they were 1-800 or 1-866 and they didn’t work.  Then I asked Mr. Google what number to use from Mexico and got a direct dial number.  I called that on our Mexican phone and I eventually got a person.  Linda gave them all her info including the long number on the back of her Iphone 5S which identifies it and when they checked it was “not unlocked.”  How sad is that.  Good news is they said they would actually unlock it and ….by later that day it was finally done and the Mexican Sim card was working.

What a day!

New Year’s Day and we’re off to the airport to pick up Ian and Linda

I spent the morning getting food ready for tonights dinner.  My own recipe for enchiladas/burritos and Mexican rice.  It’s nice to have everything prepared so we can just sit and visit.

IMG_8528

It’s just after noon and we are off to the airport for Ian and Linda’s 1:15 arrival.  We thought the traffic might be light today….and it was.  I guess everyone is home nursing a hangover!

IMG_8529

Heading out the highway to the airport and we’ve never seen the traffic so light.  Bueno!

IMG_8530

We did leave extra time for delays due to accidents and guess what….here is one.  How this guy in his khaki painted truck with giant tires managed to flip it onto it’s roof and over the bank on a straight stretch is a mystery.  Didn’t see another vehicle involved either.  Speed maybe!!!

IMG_8531

Airport on the right.  This is also the road that will take to into Stone Island or Isla de Piedra.

IMG_8532

We’ve never been to the airport so…here it is.

We were there in plenty of time, picked up our parking ticket and headed inside.  The arrivals board said that the flight was on time (1:23)  but by the time Ian and Linda arrived it was about 10 to 2.  They said they had to fill out forms upon arrival but they were all in Spanish so there was some delay getting forms in English.  We thought it odd that there was no place to sit while we waited for the flight but I found out later that there is a second floor where there are seats and a viewing area….good to know.  At this point Eric had to pay for parking…inside not outside.  Seems a little odd.

We drove them to the Cerritos Resort and their rental unit which is on the groud floor of a two story house.  When we arrived the owner’s sister was there to greet us.  She lives upstairs and the unit was still being cleaned.  The people renting it (friends of the owner) aren’t leaving until tomorrow and they were moving upstairs to stay with the owner’s sister overnight so Ian and Linda could move in.  They were from Monterey Mexico and weren’t happy about going home!  Cold and rainy up their way which is close to the Texas border.  We had a look at the unit (very lovely with all the bells and whistles) and also the roof top area where they can sit in the sunshine.  It was odd that there was no patio furniture up there but we will lend them a couple of chairs while they are here.  So…we dropped off the luggage and said we’d be back around 8.

IMG_8533

What happened next?   Well you guessed it, a quick stop at the Kiosko store next to our park for beer and then….happy hour. Eric and Ian chat and catch up.

IMG_8534

Linda is super happy to be sitting in the sunshine having a beer.

IMG_8536

Everyone is now relaxed and happy…me too!

IMG_8538

By 6pm we were ready for dinner.  Linda and Ian hadn’t eaten since breakfast so they were both hungry.  Enchiladas, Mexican rice and a lettuce salad with lime juice and salt.  Perfect and the enchiladas were a hit.

Eric took Ian and Linda home about 8pm and it was time for a little TV and bed for all of us.  They have, TV, netflix, internet and phone service so they are all set.

Good day!
