We were off to our third concert of the season on Sunday.
I would post a program but they don't seem to have them on line and they aren't being handed out at the concert either.
We cross the street to wait for the green bus. This is the only bus that goes all the way into centro and then down to Playa Sur and the Ferry docks. It's always a challenge for short term visitors to figure out which bus to take. Takes time to figure out.
This concert was being conducted by Gordon Campbell and played by the Mazatlan Symphony orchestra.
In the first half only part of the orchestra was on stage. The theater is not as full as it was last Sunday when the Ventura Quartet played.
During the first half Gordon spent a considerable amount of time explaining who wrote what composition before it was played for us. He does translate to Spanish as well but we were in agreement that a little less " blah blah" would have been in order.
This number featured a very talented trumpet player.
In this one the piccolo's were featured.
There was also a solo performance by a pianist that was an odd composition of God Save the King. I'm sure that he is very talented but the composition did nothing for us ....just a lot of noise!
After the fifteen minute intermission the second half started and it was hugely better than the first half. Although we are familiar with major composers we really just come to enjoy the music. Here most of the orchestra is on stage.
The second to last number was extraordinarily good and really drew a huge round of applause. The final number was a " Waltzing Matilda composition which finished up the afternoon. There was a standing ovation at the end. At this point it was 2pm and we were off to find something to eat.
As usual we were back at Chon's and here you can see the very small bar and cold food prep area. All the major meals are prepared upstairs.
Once again the restaurant was packed. Later on we talked to Chon and he said he has no idea why the restaurant is so busy. By the time we were done at 3:30 we were the last of the late lunch rush.
I decided to have pescado frito or whole fried fish which is a corvina. Very tasty.
Eric had his usual marlin burritos. The table next to us had a couple and a single guy. The older woman ordered the whole fish and her huband had the marlin burritos. Eric pointed and smiled and the single fellow who spoke perfect English laughed and said " Specialty of the house I guess!"
Lunch done and we were on the bus and heading home. Our bus driver was a bit grumpy and when a couple of gringos at a stop asked if this was where they would catch the Cerritos bus he said yes but didn't tell them it was his bus! This is the only bus that travels the malecon from north to south and back. He left before we could tell them to get on. Twice on the way home he had near misses with a pedestrian. A young girl who was old enough to know better almost walked right in front of the bus but he was quick to stop. Her mother gave her a good slap for that one! Farther along a teenage boy darted in front of us and almost got hit...again he managed to stop. Never a dull moment on a bus in Mexico!
Here you see the landmark " Valentino's" nightclub which was built back in the 70's. It was unused for a number of years. After renovations it now houses two restaurants that are in operation.
We were home just after 4pm after a nice Sunday afternoon out. A happy hour, a snack, some TV and bed. Another good day.
